With Sue Ann's assistance, Mary has just produced a television special on obesity and healthy eating. It gets Mary thinking that Lou needs to lose some weight. He doesn't take too kindly to Mary's advice, he who fights back in whatever way he can. Meanwhile, Sue Ann decides to host a party at Mary's place the following evening to watch the television special with all their newsroom friends. Mary doesn't invite Ted and Georgette since Georgette is almost due and believes they would rather stay at home. But Georgette feels the need to go out and not be cooped up at home any longer. After Georgette gets her first contraction during the dinner portion of the party, three issues get equal play in what is turning out to be another disastrous Mary party: the television special itself, Mary and Lou's feud about his weight, and whether Georgette's contractions will be far enough apart that both she and Ted can enjoy themselves at the party instead of rush off to the hospital.

With Lou off sick for the day, Mary, as the person in charge, talks to a man who walks into the newsroom wanting to divulge some information about a news story he has. It is an inside exclusive about a half a million dollars worth of grafts, he having the documents to prove it. The only stipulation the man has is that he not be revealed. Mary decides to air the story as a late news bulletin, which causes a sensation. Ted basks in the limelight, taking credit for the story, until Special Agent Harris with the Justice Department comes by for the documents as well as the name of the story's source. That's when Ted relinquishes his ownership of the story to Mary, who refuses to name the source, even to the federal grand jury. The judge threatens her with jail time if she doesn't reveal the source. Mary doesn't want to go to jail, but she also wants to uphold her first amendment right as a newsperson.

Mary is hosting a large party at her apartment. One of her guests, Sue Ann Nivens, who hosts the Happy Homemaker Show at the station, is offered a ride home by an unlikely source: Lars, Phyllis' husband. A few hours later, Lars telephones with a story about why he has yet to return home, a story that is obviously a lie to Mary and Rhoda, but to which Phyllis is seemingly oblivious as to the implication of something going on between Lars and Sue Ann. Every indication is that Lars and Sue Ann are having an affair, which is confirmed by a series of Lars/Sue Ann sightings. Phyllis is still oblivious to the affair until a clueless source spills the beans directly in front of her. To save her marriage, Phyllis' initial reaction is to become more like a real happy homemaker. But she decides to take more direct action, with support from Mary.

Mary voices her displeasure to Lou when she finds out that the previous associate producer made $50/week more than she does solely because he was a man, married and had a family to support, despite Mary doing a better job than he ever did. So when Mary disagrees with Lou at a station manager's meeting - Mary agreeing with general manager Jack Stoneham's idea that the news would benefit by a new, more casual and relaxed format - Lou thinks Mary is just saying it to prove she has a mind of her own and is worth $50/week more. Mary takes over running the new format, which includes a new set, new blazers but more importantly co-anchors. Mary sells Lou on the idea that Gordy would make a perfect second anchor, as he is warm, funny and bright, everything that Ted is not. In rehearsals, it becomes evident that Ted is the thankless straight man to Gordy's funny guy, evident to everyone except Ted.

On her request, Lou is having lunch with his ex-wife, Edie. It's so that she can tell him that she's getting remarried. Outwardly, Lou wants to be happy for her, but he's not sure that he really is. Although he knows he no longer loves her, her getting remarried still doesn't change the fact that it means a part of his life is ending forever. It is even more difficult for him when Edie, in a gesture to show him and the world that they are still good friends, invites him to the wedding. Lou has to decide if he is in Mary's words a modern man by going to the wedding, and if he does go if he will be able to stand watching his wife say “I do“ to another man. Meanwhile, Ted is trying to figure out a good punch line to his knock knock joke “ who?“.

A man is brutally murdered by an unseen assailant. We glimpse the murder weapon: A steel spearhead with a scythe-like hook on the side, mounted on a shaft. Some days later and Jack Taylor is returning to his beloved Galway after having been away for a year. Jack is clean and sober. Now he's back, off the booze and determined to stay away from trouble; determined not to get sucked back into the cycle of death and violence again. Jack's resolve not to take on any jobs is immediately tested when the dead man's mother who knows Jack begs for his help. To complicate Jack's investigation, an enthusiastic young man, Cody, who hero-worships Jack as the best private eye in Ireland, shows up on his doorstep, wanting to be Jack's new partner in private investigations. Realizing that Jack is close to cracking the case, The Pikemen offer Jack to join them. He is, after all, just like them: Hates injustice and sometimes metes out his own brand of justice. But Jack refuses. Then another murder is committed - Ann Hennessey's husband - and suddenly Jack finds himself the main suspect, with all the evidence pointing at him. Inspector Clancy has him arrested. Jack realizes that nobody believes his innocence, not Ann Hennessey who now never wants to see him again; not Clancy and even Kate thinks he did it. The naive, enthusiastic Cody is Jack's only ally. Jack escapes from custody and is forced to go on the run. With time running out and the net closing around him he must find the killer and prove his own innocence - before he is caught and convicted. Jack is pushed to the brink like never before.
